The key to establishing a good makeup collection is knowing when to splurge… and when to save. With summer just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about adapting your usual beauty routine to fit in with the warmer weather. That means out with the heavy foundations and ‘statement’ shades and in with light, dewy skin and flushes of colour. Here is a guide on exactly what to save and what to splurge on this summer:

Save! Nail Polish – An easy, fun way to switch up your look. Barry M and Rimmel both offer a fantastic range of shades, and they’re all under £5. This summer, I’m loving blues and minty greens – check out Barry M’s Blue Moon (£2.99) and Rimmel’s Peppermint (£4.49) and Too Cool to Tango (£3.69).

Save! Eye Shadow  – The high street brands have really stepped up their game in the eye shadow department recently. Maybelline’s Colour Tattoo 24HR cream eye shadows (£4.99) are nothing short of revolutionary – bringing long-lasting cream formulas to the masses at an extremely affordable price. For a gorgeous, easy summer look – try Pink Gold or Barely Branded.

Splurge! Foundation options – Skin is the most important part of any makeup routine so you want to make sure that the products you apply are of high quality. Summer is the perfect time to try something a little lighter for your skin to let it breathe during the warmer months and my go-to summer option is a tinted moisturiser – Laura Mercier does a fantastic one (£33.00). If you want to go even lighter, then try MAC’s Mineralize SkinFinish Natural (£21.00). This perfects the skin, creating an airbrushed, flawless finish whilst still looking like you aren’t wearing anything at all.

Save! Mascara – High Street brands have come so far in developing state-of-the-art mascara formulas that there really is no need to splurge on higher end versions. Maybelline’s The Falsies Flared (£7.99) and L’Oreal’s Telescopic mascaras (£10.99) are two of the best I’ve ever tried – and they are ideal for creating that fluttery lash look.

Save & Splurge! Lipstick – When the weather gets warmer, you really don’t want to be sporting the high maintenance look – but at the same time, you want to look pulled together. The easiest way to do that is to opt for a bold lip. Matte lips look too heavy for summer, so try a balm-based lipstick – moisturising and often so glossy, you won’t need a separate lip gloss. Revlon Lip Butters are fantastic and are only £7.99 whilst the Clinique Chubby Sticks (£16.00) are a perennial favourite – try Mighty Mimosa for the perfect everyday pink.
