Eyebrows are such a fundamental feature and yet consistently seem to get overlooked in the every day girl’s beauty routine. Eyebrows help to define your face and enhance your features; they create symmetry and can lift your entire face.
Eyebrows have undoubtedly been the ‘it-thing’ amongst celebrities for a while now – model Cara Delevingne has made an entire career out of her striking brows whilst actresses like Camilla Belle and Jennifer Connelly have long been known for their strong brows. For an everyday look though, a super defined brow isn’t always the best option. Brows should serve to accentuate your features not dominate them – if your brows are the first thing that anyone notices about you, then you might have a problem (unless of course, you’re a world famous supermodel).
The first rule of brow maintenance is to put down the tweezers. It’s important to be well groomed but you don’t want to go too far, otherwise your brow hairs might never grow back. Thicker brows are more flattering and will be less maintenance in the long run – and your older self will undoubtedly thank you for not having to work with super thin eyebrows.
Next, assemble your brow master kit. There are several options when it comes to filling in your brows – you can opt for pencil, gel or powder. If you’re on a tight budget then have a search around in your current makeup collection for a shade that will suit your colouring. Ideally, you’ll be looking for a colour that is two to three shades lighter than your brow hair colour. Even if you have jet black hair, a black powder will be far too harsh – a dark brown or even a grey will blend in better and create the definition you need without looking OTT. Here are some of the products we recommend.
If you want to purchase brow-specific products, then ELF do a fantastic brow kit which contains a powder to fill in your brows and a darker gel colour to further define and set your brow hairs.
If you want to splurge, then Anastasia Beverly Hills offers an extensive range of brow products which are perennial celebrity favourites – from pencils and powders to brow stencils for the perfect arch, Anastasia has you covered.
Overwhelmed by choice? Then opt for the Suqqu refillable eyebrow pencil – a favourite of Chanel makeup artist Lisa Eldridge. Simply ‘feather-in’ your brows with light strokes and set with a gel; Benefit does a great one or alternatively, use a clear mascara or even the left over product from your regular mascara. You’ll be left with beautifully defined brows that will act as a wonder-lift for your face.
